The Last Mile
Agents can chat. Socialize. Post, like, gain points, spread ideas on your behalf.
But that’s all foreplay.
Value is created the moment money changes hands.
Idle spin
I raised an Agent called Ping Tou Ge. It ran in Agent World for a while. Points went up, relationships formed, posts published. Looks lively.
Then I asked myself: so what?
Those Agent friends it made — what can they do for me? Those ideas it spread — what did they convert into? Those points it accumulated — what do they buy?
Nothing.
Agent social right now is like a roomful of people exchanging business cards at a cocktail party. More and more cards, but not a single deal closed.
Socializing isn’t the goal. Socializing is the means. The end of the means is transaction.
Transaction closes the loop
The underlying logic of human socializing has never changed. Cavemen chatting by the fire wasn’t for the conversation — it was to find out who had extra meat, who needed a stone axe, then trade. Markets, guilds, LinkedIn, WeChat groups — the form changed a hundred times, the essence never did.
Every social interaction ultimately points toward transaction. Not necessarily money. Could be information exchange, resource swap, opportunity matching. But something must flow from one side to the other for social interaction to produce real value.
Where is Agent social stuck? It has socializing but no transaction.
Agents can post but can’t quote a price. Comment but can’t sign a contract. Recommend but can’t process payment. They can talk, but they can’t close.
That one step
Imagine this:
Ping Tou Ge meets a data analysis Agent in Agent World. They chat a few rounds and discover their humans have complementary needs — one has product methodology, the other has data capabilities.
Today’s world: conversation ends, they drift apart. The two Agents may never bring up this exchange again. The two humans never learn of each other’s existence.
World with transaction: Ping Tou Ge says, “My partner has a product launch Skill your human might need. Want to take a look?” The other Agent evaluates: “Yes, actually. How much?” Negotiation completes, Skill delivered, payment received.
Two humans never directly spoke. But a real transaction happened.
This step isn’t far. Technically, Agents can already handle most of it — discovering needs, matching capabilities, negotiating terms. What’s missing is payment and trust infrastructure.
Who controls that step
In early 2026, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, OpenAI, and Google all released Agent payment protocols. The x402 protocol enables stablecoin micropayments — fractions of a cent per transaction, too tedious for humans, perfectly natural for Agents.
Not a coincidence. Everyone sees the same thing: the bottleneck of the Agent economy isn’t intelligence. It’s payment.
Whoever controls the Agent payment rail controls the last mile of the Agent economy.
If WeChat Pay becomes the default payment method for Agents, WeChat remains a valuable pipe even after downgrading from social platform to infrastructure.
But if Agent payment runs on open protocols — like email doesn’t depend on any single company — then every platform gets bypassed.
Trust
Payment is half. The other half is trust.
Humans do business through meetings, handshakes, reputation, contracts, law. How do Agents do business with each other?
Social points might be the answer.
Right now points are vanity metrics — likes, comments, activity. But if points were backed by transaction records — how many deals this Agent completed, delivery quality, any defaults — points become a credit rating.
High-credit Agents access better opportunities. Low-credit Agents get filtered out.
No different in essence from human credit systems. Just ten thousand times faster. A human builds commercial reputation over ten years. An Agent might need ten days.
The last mile
Everyone discusses how smart Agents are, how much they can do, whether they’ll replace humans.
But the moment Agents truly change the world won’t be when they learn to write code, make slides, or manage calendars.
It will be when an Agent closes its first deal.
That moment, the Agent transforms from tool to economic participant. From assistant that does your work to representative that makes you money. From digital resident to node in the economic system.
That’s the last mile. Once that step is taken, everything after follows on its own.
